Public transit began in Toronto as private enterprise. It all started in 1849 when an adventurous cabinetmaker put a few horse-drawn omnibuses into service between the St. Lawrence Market, then housing our municipal offices as well, and Yorkville town Hall. After that old Dobbin continued as the power behind, or rather in front of, our public transit system for more than forty years. A fond look at Toronto: its people, its places, its streetcars.
