McBurney, Margaret and Byers, Mary Tavern in the Town Early Inns and Taverns of Ontario Toronto, Canada University of Toronto 1987 0-8020-5732-2 / 9780802057327 Hard Cover Fine Fine Architectural History Robertson, Hugh As soon as the first roads were cut through Ontario's wilderness, an inkeeper, that jack-of-all-trades to his pioneer community, opened the door of his hostelry. His was the first public building until the town hall appeared years later. All events of any importance took place in his establishment: court sessions, elections, land sales, and even, in one instance, a sitting of the Legislative Assembly of Upper Canada. Doctors, dentists, and travelling salesmen met the public in the inns. Church services and Sunday School classes competed with circuses and concerts. Political movements were born there. Settlers were given provisions, directions, loans and supplies at the inn. In their fourth book on the buildings of early Ontario, Margaret McBurney and Mary Byers turn their attention to the establishments that were the centres of early communities. From over 200 inns visited during a four-year period, the authors have selected eighty-five; their history is in many ways the history of the province. Their locations follow the main stage routes which fanned out like the spokes of a wheel with Toronto as the hub. Making extensive use of journals of the period, the authors recreate the atmosphere of the inns, the sights and sounds and smells; some 140 illustrations including many photographs by Hugh Robertson further help to evoke this fascinating element of pioneer life.
